Romania’s food retail sector closed 2024 with a record turnover of 149 billion lei (€30 billion), marking a 4.35% increase compared to 2023, according to data from RisCo.ro. The sector’s combined net profit reached 4.1 billion lei.
Lidl remains the undisputed leader in Romania’s retail landscape, posting revenues of 23.97 billion lei and a net profit of 1.22 billion lei in 2024. The German-owned retailer employs 12,735 people nationwide.
Following closely, Kaufland, also part of the Schwarz Group, reported a turnover of 19.58 billion lei and a net profit of 1.15 billion lei, supported by a workforce of 14,592 employees.
Profi, Romania’s largest proximity retailer, ranked third with revenues of 14.12 billion lei. However, the company recorded a net loss of 210 million lei, primarily due to high expansion costs as it continues to grow its network of neighborhood stores.
